I had been filming John Nelson, a world-renowned composer, over five years at the request of my grandfather, who simply wanted the story captured.
The challenge was that the raw interviews alone weren’t enough. I needed to craft a tight, compelling narrative that honored the emotion and made it resonate far beyond a simple biography.
The breakthrough came when I discovered “The Other Side” by Perfume Genius — it unlocked the emotional structure I needed.
I realized I could amplify the story by blending footage from my broader body of professional work — layering real-world projects into the emotional arc without losing focus.
-
Designed a sharp emotional hook within the first few seconds
Paired key story beats to the rise and fall of the music track
Selected moments of highest emotional tension across multiple projects to build the backbone of the edit
Structured the pacing to hold the audience’s attention and drive toward a peak emotional moment
-
Right before the music “drop,” the composer stands completely still — then makes one sudden, sharp conducting movement.
I timed this movement precisely with the explosion of the music to create a visceral jolt in the audience, sparking the goosebump effect.
Everything before this moment built the tension; everything after accelerated into high-intensity footage drawn from various client projects to sustain the emotional high.
-
